A Learning and Design Adventure...

Game the System A Learning and Design Adventure

Play along on the Epic Adventure Game the SystemTM game board as this hands-on playshop takes you through the 5-step process of gamifiying your organizational quest (project or training program). By following the 5-step plan, you are essentially assured a successful outcome.

Gamification invites people to participate and engage by integrating game mechanics and game dynamics into such things as a website, online community, marketing campaign, and as demonstrated in this interactive gamified workshop - even a traditional training and development program.

The goal is to increase learning and engagement through key concepts found in game design and behavioral psychology. By adding game mechanics to training, Gamification not only increases interest, it makes training "fun."

Gamification does NOT equal technology ... it is really a way of thinking about the development and delivery of your training programs.

In this 6 credit hours, hands-on playshop you will design a gamified training and development project customized for your organization.

Level 1:  Define Learning Objectives... Fundamentals, the Building Blocks of Fun! - Gamification is an important and powerful new strategy for influencing and motivating people. Simply defined, gamification uses game mechanics and rewards for non-game applications in order to increase engagement and loyalty. We'll start with the fundamentals... your learning objectives and how gamification will help you achieve them.

  • Determine how Gamification will help you to achieve your objectives
  • Define your measurable business objectives
  • Identify what you want your players to do

Level 2:  It's Story Time - Create an Epic Adventure - A well-designed and well-implemented training and development program promotes engagement, meaning, mastery, and autonomy. Add gaming elements to your curriculum design and leverage the power of creativity and engagement. We'll build your quest around a compelling and engaging storyline.

  • Frame and wrap your quest in a spellbinding story
  • Experience The Story Coaster, Joseph Campbell's Monomyth, and Rory's Story Cubes – and how these tools can help you
  • Create a narrative thread that pulls through the entire game

Level 3:  Design Variety into Your Learning Activities - Games provide an ideal adult learning environment. Participants can practice their skills, get immediate feedback on their progress, earn recognition, and build confidence in their ability to overcome a challenge. We're not just designing a string of activities, but weaving activities together in a master sequence for overall effectiveness and retention.

  • Create the right mix of ingredients in your learning activities to allow the participants to acquire knowledge and skill, rather than merely receive them
  • Strategically place learning activities in the overall sequence of events
  • Design activities to double-check that learning has occurred

Level 4:  Add the Game Design and Mechanics - Game mechanics are directly linked to human desires: reward, status, achievement, self-expression, competition, and altruism. What would it look like to include game elements such as points, levels, challenges, rewards, and leaderboards… to drive participation, engagement and loyalty? We'll design so that participants can confront their ideas and values, make choices to compete or cooperate, and help them grasp the total course content.

  • Identify the game elements you will use (points, badges, leaderboards, etc.)
  • Mix the appropriate amount of competition, collaboration, group and individual quests, challenges, and achievements to earn points, badges, and other rewards
  • Deploy your system (Ex: no-tech, low-tech, additional programming on existing website, mobile devises, etc.)

Level 5:  Tally up the Aesthetics So They Wanna Play! - When you seek to gamify activities in the workplace to achieve your business objectives, it helps to understand the psychology of gaming to create an engaging experience that motivates desired behaviors. Gamification creates the best match for your participants who prefer to be involved with immediate, direct, and concrete experiences.

  • Create an overall design that appeals to different senses - touch, sight, and sound - using colors, designs,  textures, and manipulatives
  • Tie everything back to the other four levels, especially the business objectives
  • Answer the question:  Is it fun?

Gamification of real-world training and development is a powerful technique which can motivate people and help generate loyalty to your organization, its products, and its message. At its core, Gamification is about finding the fun in the things that we have to do.

Making business processes compelling by making them fun is about the most fascinating and coolest thing that I can think of!
